Volunteer

It is the generosity of our volunteer groups from across our local community that enables The Dish to provide meals in Hornsby three nights a week.

Volunteer groups cook nourishing meals and serve them with friendship and without judgement to people from all walks of life. Or you can be part of the Community Food Program team operating on a Monday during the day.

For many volunteers, The Dish is the highlight of their week.

What's involved

If your church or community group is interested in volunteering, here's what's involved:

  • Serve one night a term or more frequently if you choose to.
  • Nominate a leader from your group to be our point of contact.
  • Provide 40 main meals and 40 desserts in takeaway containers. See the FAQs for food tips.
  • At 5:30pm your team of five or more arrives with your ready-to-serve food. You serve your food, make and serve drinks like tea and coffee and enjoy conversation with our Dish friends. You clean up and finish when the last friend leaves at about 6:45pm.
  • Community Food Program (Food Relief) - Monday 10am-2pm. Help with sorting & packing food hampers with food collected through food waste initiative, SecondBite and local supermarkets. Delivery of food hampers once packed to families in need.

See the FAQs for information about volunteers aged under 18.
